Travel with me as a 'little detective' trying to make sense of a life few now know. There was a time when some people were afraid to drive a car! When no one wanted a dryer, clothes smelled so good drying out on the line. We had a rag man, milk and bread were delivered, along with coal and ice. Through these intricate and inventive illustrations, DeGraff seeks to create visual representations for some of his favorite works that "provide a sense of contour—sometimes literal and sometimes metaphorical." Many of the stories depicted are from classic works of children's literature (such as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and A Wrinkle in Time), and all are plotted intricately with vibrant colors. DeGraff also includes sophisticated renderings from the works of Shakespeare, Kafka, Borges, Homer, Austen, and Verne. Some representations are maps in the common sense, with DeGraff tracing the movements of Odysseus around the Mediterranean, Scrooge and company around London, or Hamlet et al. through the rooms of Elsinore castle. Some feature diagrams, such as the depiction of the Pequod from Moby-Dick, while others are more abstract, making this a complete, rewarding package for bookworms of all ages.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07598590966874367431noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4925116861294522811.post-85873468736943205992015-10-17T10:39:00.001-07:002015-10-17T10:39:59.699-07:00The Lake House ( looks good)

The Lake House by Kate Morton (Atria) - Bestselling storyteller Morton (The Secret Keeper) excels in this mystery set against the gothic backdrop of 1930s England. In Cornwall, the wealthy Edevane family prepares for its annual midsummer ball at Loeanneth, their isolated estate. That night, teenager Alice Edevane is lingering near the nursery when someone kidnaps the cherished Edevane son, Theo; despite a lengthy investigation, he is never found. The story moves forward to 2003 London, where Det. Sgt. Sadie Sparrow is suspended after speaking to the media about a missing-person case, recently closed, that haunts her. Sparrow seeks refuge with her grandfather in Cornwall. On her first morning run there, she finds the now-dilapidated Loeanneth mansion deep in the woods. Curious, Sparrow peers through the windows into tumbledown rooms abandoned in haste long ago. She begins to investigate the 70-year-old Edevane case with help from the Cornwall locals, including a retired copper who was there in 1933 when Theo disappeared. Morton’s plotting is impeccable, and her finely wrought characters, brought together in the end by Sparrow’s investigation, are as surprised as readers will be by the astonishing conclusion.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07598590966874367431noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4925116861294522811.post-8933800591377431822015-03-23T23:51:00.001-07:002015-03-23T23:51:53.022-07:00Madlyn Fafard,: Front porch ,memories of times pastMadlyn Fafard,: Front porch ,memories of times pastAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07598590966874367431noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4925116861294522811.post-13305134937462448852015-03-09T11:14:00.001-07:002015-05-21T11:19:47.632-07:00Five Came Back, Mark Harris, a wonderful peek at the culture and history of the time...

Maybe I am one of the oldest reviewers, so my perspective is different. Stories and happenings in this book affected me as a child, even the greatest movies. I was there, alert and watching the adult world. I knew of Ford, Huston, Wyler, and Capra...I knew lots of things a child should not or might not have known, but I was a reader and loved the movies.

Deeply affected as a child by this monstrous happening, I was and am stil able to cry over the

event. Eventually, I wrote two books, about the culture and the war, before and after 1941 and

1945 from that childhood point of view.

.

The generations since, can only try to understand what it was like. it is very hard to capture

the collective consciousness of the time. Mark Harris himself, may not have experienced it, and

may never really know it, like someone who lived it, but , he captured the era brilliantly.

The directors infused us with patriotism, through news shorts that were shown in movies at the

Saturday matinee, as well as the adult times. We were right and we were going to win the war.

I could once again feel that patriotism that ran through our veins , adults and children alike.

Our loved ones, would come home!

My uncles came alive again as the Directors moved through the war with the different branches

of the service and when the war ended our family was one of the lucky ones. Everyone came home,

even two of them wounded as young men. Harold Russell, was our hero in my hometown of Framingham, Mass., near where he lived. I even knew who he was and had seen him, in awe, at least once.

Filming the atrocities of war so we could see it on the big screen on Saturday matinee made us all aware of the tremendous sacrifice of life. For what? For one man to rule the world , I often

thought .
It was the pictures of the souls in the death camps that raised the hackles! The final sickening

straw! How , why ? The damage done to Director George Stevens who saw photographed ,
and experienced, was so real and profound . I visualized once again those horrors. One can only

imagine the soldiers who stepped up to soothe, calm, and comfort the barely living survivors who

rose from among stacks of dead bodies. I screamed once again inside me at the utter horror of evil men who walked the earth with us.
The horrid cruelty of the Japanese toward their prisoners and the Red Cross, came back to me and I remembered asking Mom and Dad and myself, why the Emperor got away with this ? Harris answered

that question after all these years. I still think the Emperor should have done something to

stop the war and should have paid a price for not doing that.

Through the lives of five men , the war came back and though these men were older than me by 39

plus or minus years , we shared a common collective consciousness . I wonder if this is proof

of that collective consciousness and how we make our world? I know none of us wanted war, but

once we were in it we all were in it to win. Yes, when it was over we "had enough."

A great narrative, stirring and so enveloping about the time including the investigation into

Communism in Hollywood and more are all there.
Yes, a few tears peeked out as I closed the book for the last time and put the era back to sleep

in my mind , but not before I had made comparisons about the rise of Hitler with the rise of

terrorism. History is repeating itself !

Michael Feinstein reviews THE B SIDE...by Ben Yagoda. in New York Times Book Review 2/15/2015

What a pleasant surprise, because I happen to think that Michael Feinstein has "it" as a musician. What a treat to find he had written a review of this book that talks about the great music we had from the 1920's to the 1950's, which I love and blog about on my other blog, Madlyn Fafard , Lifes a Blast!

The loss of the great music of the past was a combination of the bosses, and the artists, of the time, and I remember the arrogance of some of my friends, which probably reflected the opinion of others. I happened to love all types of music, and if I said that I loved a country song, I was considered a country bumpkin by my Northeast friends...( back when we were teens), and who would listen to to opera? Who liked jazz...?
Boogie Woogie was not everyone's cup of tea either.....we all asked for it...!

But, what woke me up back then was Les Paul and his new sound....that is when I finally realized that the piano was on the way out and the guitar was on the way in as the instrument of choice, never dreaming that the piano would never again eclipse the guitar. ( at least it seems that way)

If you want to know what went on in the music world of those days, and the advent of the 1960's music...which never leaves me either because suddenly, I was caught in the music of the Beatles....at a party one night and I was in love with music again....

If you check my blog there were great singers in the 60's that get little credit, like Don Cherry, he had a wonderful voice, I played his records over and over.... Billy Eckstein was still around, ohhh! great singing and of course Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughn.... and jazz was catching on more and more, and lives big time today in my world....

Thank you for the review Michael Weinstein....
In this way, hopefully adressing an argument that points out there are reasonable people on both sides of the fence that hold a 'moderate opinion'.

Today with so many professors asking for people to let their voice be heard, we have lost moderation, and gained more than peaceful demonstrations. None of us want that, so I suggest that not only grade school teachers consider building classes in rhetoric from a book like this, but even college professors, so we can learn to "get along" instead of building up more rage, and dislike for each other with who has the loudest voice, or the biggest following who can block a road or ransack a neighborhood.

The book is excellent for politicians,it explains how Barack Obama was able to captivate his audience with his speeches. The average reader and or teacher will use it as a bible to accomplish the skills needed.

Jay Heinrichs should be visiting our colleges and giving some of his great examples.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07598590966874367431noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4925116861294522811.post-57544798207731940472015-01-19T07:21:00.003-08:002015-01-19T07:21:29.831-08:00

The different views presented here, helped to solidify what I believe, and I think that is the major reason for enjoying this book, to learn other opinions and ideas and expand your own thinking. A funny thing happened as I read the book, I recalled a scene in my philosophy class, I could see my professor of many years ago, who said in the class...."matter is not real, it is consciousness that makes it real, you better believe it is real" This thought kept crossing my mind as I read this book and then one day as telling my 9 year old grand daughter stories of my youth, I ran out of stories ...and I said to her
"Did you know that matter is not real, it is created by consciousness?"
"Wow, Nannie!" was the response.
I had to laugh about that for a long time, and ponder how to tell children that the world is a creation of consciousness, so that they can use the tool to help us make a better world...If in fact, it is a world created by consciousness, as I believe it is. I think learning to express love is the major reason for consciousness, along with other emotions of goodness, and to do that we have to have an antagonist...need I say more?

So, for the lay reader, it took a couple of weeks to go back and forth finding time to read and finish the book, though I was reading two books at the time, it was interesting enough to pick this one to finish first. The other book I am reading and close to finish is, "Thank You For Arguing" surprising how easy it is to win an election based on knowing the points in this book, more to come..

I could not help but think of the parallels of the United States becoming a country of many States during the same period of time, as also the unification of Italy. It was a time when unification made sense, so people could be accounted for and the State could grow and be responsible .

Crossing the Alps was an adventure and although the Grand Tour was not mentioned it was easily alluded to in the crossing of the Alps. The horses could not make some of the steep inclines, so a donkey was brought along . The coach would be taken apart, and the donkey would haul it on a travois over the top of the incline, where it would be reassembled for the harrowing ride down the mountain. Robert Louis Stevenson and others took the Grand Tour in this manner, across the Alps to Italy, and back.

Superstition and lack of communication led to the death of one of Cassini's map makers. Spas grew up where people came to take the waters and fed by towns anxious for income more business grew up around the spas. Gossip could travel faster than man, one wondered how that could happen?

Today we think that everyone needs what civilization has to offer, but on is startled back to a one room cottage, with firepit, outside accommodations and uncleanliness. This was life for many of us before the advent of industrialization

Finally, I learned about the start of the Tour de France and I learned why, when I was in Paris in the 1950's the French would seem rude when they barked at me, "Speak French!" I did struggle to speak French, and wondered why they were so rude, after all I was only a "kid", struggling to make myself understood,( as though I could just spout out French)

The railroads, the coach roads, the many people that walked from the outlying areas, all came together in the glittering city of Paris, uniting the languages, the cultures and the ideals, until, we had ...Vive La France!

An interesting journey, worth the time for armchair travelers, that like to accumulate knowledge about the world and its people.
Double Cross, Ben Macintyre

This is my review on Amazon

What stands out in my personal review of the book,( a different approach I guess), is that even the spy controllers were stealing money off the top. A spy would ask for money and it would come from his handler less the handlers cut. Money was always necessary, and it was amazing how easy it was to get. At one point the Germans were making payments to a bank in the United States for their spy ( our double agent) to draw on....Just another ridiculous thing about wars....for what? What gain.? Of course the thrill of being a spy and getting away with it had to be part of what was going on. Yet, everyday they risked death, if they got caught. Another standout in my mind was the fact that for periods of time, no one paid attention to the spy messages coming in.
It was laughable that the spy in Spain could make up so much and get away with it, while getting paid.

For the love of a dog, we almost blew it! Yes, we could make miracles, but we could not get this spy's dog into Britain, due to animal regulations...ha ha....the pettiness of it in war time, when an out of place pause in conversation could be a sign that the message was a lie....

It was fun to read, especially if you like history and have an interest in the 2nd World War.

Farrell

It's interesting that new ways to protect buildings from seismic shock are being developed that include bending sound and bending light.....just a hint at what Farrell discusses in his books
This work presents the full history of the Exploded Planet hypothesis. There is ample evidence across our solar system of cataclysmic and catastrophic destruction events, and many planets are scarred from incredible impacts, and teeter in their orbits from unexplained causes. Rejecting naturalist and materialist assumptions of catastrophism forwarded by other researchers, Farrell seriously asserts that the causes are based in ancient myths of a Cosmic War in the heavens. Incorporating extraterrestrial artefacts, cutting-edge ideas in contemporary physics, and the texts of ancient myths into his argument, Farrell maintains that an ancient interplanetary war was fought in our own solar system with weapons of extraordinary power and sophistication. The book includes: secret technology behind the ancient Tablets of Destinies, the ancient texts telling of such destructions: from Sumeria (Tiamats destruction by Marduk), Egypt (Edfu and the Mars connections), Greece (Saturns role in the War of the Titans) and the ancient Americas; ancient and current mechanisms which could explode planets; and, the true scientific reason for our solar system's asteroid belt

In 1957 from the Golden Jubillee brochure.
Founded by Reverend Pietro Maschi in 1907

This is from the brochure

There was a terrible disaster in Framingham, in July, 1906. The tragic work of digging out the victims of the disaster, spread thru the area, and one of the first volunteers was Rev. Maschi, who was attached to Sacred Heart Church in the North End, of Boston. Rev. Maschi had been in Framingham on many occasions visiting relatives, so he knew the area.

When the Amsden building fell he was notified by phone, arriving at the still smoking ruins as a victim was being carried out, Father Maschi bent over the broken body of the victim , for the last rites.

"His face paled as he looked down and discovered the victim was his own brother, Romualdo Maschi, a construction worker and the father of a young family."

From that moment on Father Maschi became determined to bring an Italian Mission Church to Framingham, and that is how we have a Mission Church in Framingham.

From the Framinghan Tribune, May 29, 1902

"Andrew Lepardo, foreman of the construction gang for the Westboro, Hopkinton Street Railway Company leased a house on Winter Street to house 100 Italian laborers, who arrived to the work..."

"The Padrone's were promising jobs and "streets paved with gold."

The Framingham Tribune, March 5, 1903
"An Italian working on the Weston Aquaduct was kicked in the forehead by a mule and died. He had been working there for a short while, so was known only by a number, thus it was difficult to ascertain his name...."

Tid bits from a paper I did on The History of the Social Development of the Italian Immigrant in Framingham, Mass., at Framinghan State College, 1967, Madlyn Pizzeri ( Fox) Fafard
